  • Saw significant action against Carolina (9/24), catching four passes for 72 yards, including being on receiving end of flea-flicker
  • Led team in both receptions and receiving yards
  • Saw action at New Orleans (10/8), grabbing team-high five catches for 16 yards and one touchdown

College Career:
 
  • Smith redshirted in 2000, his freshman season at Stanford
  • He earned his first varsity letter as a reserve tight end, seeing most of his 2001 action on special    teams
  • He finished that campaign with a 20-yard reception
  • After an injury to starter Brett Pierce, Smith moved into the lineup for the final 10 games of the 2002 season
  • He ended up with 380 yards and two touchdowns, ranking second on the team with 30 catches (12.7 avg.)
  • Smith earned All-Pac 10 Conference recognition, both on the field and in the classroom in 2003
  • He was one of the starters in the team's two-tight end system, hauling in 24 passes for 185 yards (7.7 avg.) and three scores
  • In 2004, Smith ranked second in the country among tight ends with 52 receptions for 706 yards (13.6 avg.) and three touchdowns
  • He was the runner-up for the Mackey Award, given annually to the nation's top tight end
  • Smith was a consensus second-team All-America selection as a senior, adding first-team All-Pac-10 Conference and Team MVP awards
  • He became the first Stanford tight end to be named first-team All-Pac-10 since Greg Baty in 1985 and the first tight end to lead the team in receiving since Bob Moore in 1969
  • Smith's 52 receptions is the second best single-season total for a Cardinal tight end (61 by Baty in 1985)
  • In 44 contests with the Cardinal, Smith finished his career by catching 107 passes for 1,291 yards (12.1 avg.) and eight touchdowns
High School Career:
 
  • Alex was a SuperPrep first-team All-American, PrepStar All-Midlands, all-state and All-Centennial League selection following his senior season at Mullen High School
  • Smith caught 12 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns as a junior and snatched 35 passes for 357 yards and four scores as a senior
  • He helped Mullen High win the Colorado 5A Championship as a junior
  • Smith was a three-year varsity letter-winner in basketball and four-year letter-winner in track
  • He was named honorable mention All-Colorado and first-team all-league in basketball as a senior
  • In track, he competed in the high jump and 400-meters, placing eighth in the state in the high jump as a senior at 6-foot-5
  • Smith was a nominee for the Fred Steinmark Award for Colorado Athlete of the Year, a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society, selected to receive a Kappa Alpha Psi Scholarship, and a finalist for the Scahs Foundation Scholarship
